The Godfather
In 1972, one of the best movies of all time was released: «The Godfather» («El Padrino»), directed by the filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola and based on the book of the same name by the writer Mario Puzo, which recounted the boom and fall of Vito Corleone, a cunning, wise mafia boss in the United States.
According to the writer Mario Puzo, his story is based on the real life of several criminals who lived at the beginning of the 20th century in New York. One of the most famous and whose story is identical to that of Don Vito, is that of Giuseppe «Joe» Profaci. This was the boss of the New York La Cosa Nostra, and was the founder of what is now known as the Colombo crime family.
On December 5, 1928, Profaci attended a mob meeting in Cleveland, Ohio, which would make him an organized crime boss in Brooklyn. Given Profaci’s lack of experience in organized crime, it’s not clear why the New York gangs gave him power in Brooklyn; but what is true is that his power grew from his contacts made through his olive oilbusiness.
Therefore, after his appointment, Don Vito Corleone was the head of the Mafia in New York and introduced and controlled imports and the entire olive oilbusiness in the US, through Genco Pura Olive Oil Company.
